Trump Probably Owns Unsecured Android Smartphone

The
guesses are that the new President of the US owns a 2012 Samsung Galaxy
S3 that isn’t even updated anymore, which automatically leaved its owner
vulnerable to cyber criminals and nation-state actors.
While
Donald Trump is a fan of the security built into the White House
system, which ensures no one is tapping his calls, his love to security
perhaps doesn’t extend to his smartphone. In the interview, Trump
referred to it as to an old, unsecured Android device, which he keeps
carrying around the White House to the protests of his aides. On the
other hand, previous reports suggested that the President traded his
phone for a secure, encrypted device approved by the Secret Service.
The industry experts have analyzed images of the President using his phone and suggested that he owns a Samsung Galaxy S3, which was first released 5 years ago – due to its age, this phone doesn’t even receive any security updates or software releases. Of course, this would be considered by many as a major security threat – for instance, if the phone could be hacked, it can result being turned into an eavesdropping device to listen in on secret conversations. This can be done by potential hackers through a phishing attack – all it takes is sending a link or attachment in an email or a tweet from a seemingly trusted source. Once the victims have clicked the link or attachment, their phones are infected with malware able to record what the user types, spy on the network the phone is connected to, track their location and listen to their conversations via the microphone.
As you may remember, President Obama owned a BlackBerry when he first came to office, and it was later replaced by a smartphone of the undisclosed maker. It is known that both Obama’s devices were locked down by the secret service, and any apps able to pose a security risk were removed.
