WhatsApp Introduced 2-Step Verification

WhatsApp
has implemented a new two-step verification process in order to boost
security for users. The feature is optional and is meant to considerably
increase the hurdles for a third-party when breaking into your account.
The company explained that the security feature has been in testing since November 2016 and is currently rolling out in stages. If you want to turn on two-step verification, please log in to WhatsApp, go to Settings, then go to Account and enable “Two-step verification” there. The system will ask you to come up with a 6-digit security code in addition to your phone number and text message or voice call verification. The company said that users would also be asked to enter their security code every week, but in fact not all users reported seeing this warning when enabling this feature.
You can also register an email address with WhatsApp and use it to turn off 2-step verification or reset the security code if you forget it. The company clarified that it would not verify that email address to confirm its accuracy, so the users are highly recommended to provide an accurate email address. In this case, they won’t be locked out of their account if they forget the passcode. It was also explained that if you don’t register an email address with the service, you will be able to log back into WhatsApp only after 7 days of last using it (if you forgot your 6-digit passcode). However, the company warned that in this case you would lose all pending messages upon reverifying. Moreover, if your number is reverified after one month of last using the service and without your passcode, your account will be deleted and replaced with a new one.
The feature is being introduced a few weeks after the revelation of a vulnerability in WhatsApp’s encryption protocols.
