Star Trek Makers Settled with Fan Movie Creators

The case between Star Trek movie studio, Paramount Pictures, and the movie spin-off "Prelude to Axanar" is finally over: just before the trial the parties reached a settlement, according to which the movie will be published in a very edited form.

Back in 2016, Star Trek movie studios started a legal battle against the producers of a short fan movie and the planned follow-up feature film, accusing them of copyright violation. This court case put the future of the crowdfunded project at risk, as the copyright owners claimed ownership over Star Trek related settings, characters, clothing, words, and even the Klingon language (although the latter is now safe, as the plaintiffs dropped this claim earlier).

Earlier, the court decided that the fan film was not entitled to a fair use defense, but the parties fortunately agreed to a settlement and asked the court to dismiss the case. As such, the Axanar team won’t have to pay damages, but the planned movie for which it raised more than a million dollars through crowdfunding will now look different. For example, its length will be significantly shorter: instead of a planned 100-minute movie, Axanar will turn into just two 15-minute segments. Both “Prelude to Axanar” and “Axanar” can be distributed on YouTube, but can’t be monetized through ads. Besides, the script will be revised to exclude several copyrighted elements. However, it is still unclear whether the usage of Klingon language in the movie is permitted.

Although the fans who backed the project financially were quite disappointed with the settlement, the movie producers explained that they really had no other viable option.
