UK Will Block More Pirate Sites

The largest British ISPs are now required to block over 100 piracy related websites, according to the recent High Court order. The order was handed down on behalf of the music industry and targets a number of MP3 download services and a search engine for the well-known cyberlocker Mega.co.nz.

6 British Internet service providers are demanded to block access of their customers to more “pirate” websites. These efforts of the entertainment industry started three years ago, and the list keeps growing. In the most recent move, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has teamed up with music licensing outfit Phonographic Performance Limited and obtained a court order that targets a number of MP3 download websites.

This move added 17 more sited to the UK blocklist, thus bringing the total number of blocked websites to 110. Almost all of those newly blocked services are MP3 search engines, but one of them is a search engine for the Mega cloud storage service founded by Kim Dotcom.

Several days ago, major UK ISPs including Sky, BT and Virgin implemented the new changes to prevent their subscribers from reaching those websites. Soon all other ISPs are also expected to follow suit.

It is known that British broadband providers have given up on defending their position in court, so it’s now just a formality for rights owners to block a pirate site in the country, though such efforts are not cheap. For example, the rumors are that even an unopposed application for a blocking order would costs rights owners about £14,000 per website. If this were true, then the total costs of the requesting parties would exceed a million pounds.
